Kelly & Bob. Quiksilver & MSG.
by Joseph Perello about Announcement, Sports & Entertainment, Broadcast
Last week was fun. In a nick of time, we finished a deal with MSG and Fuse to broadcast Quiksilver's first ever surf contest in Long Beach, New York.
It was in a nick of time because MSG hadclosed down Times Square to create the perfect back-drop to announce our competition - the Air In the Square skate and BMX competition. But deals happen in a strange way and we needed every last minute to nail it down. All of this was happening while the world's greatest surfer, Kelly Slater, and Quiksilver founder and CEO, Bob McKnight were in our offices to meet with the FDNY and - hopefully - announce our TV deal with MSG. Well, it got done and we couldn't be more thrilled to be working with Kelly Slater, Bob McKnight, Quiksilver and MSG.
For MSG's part, they will air the first ever surf contest in New York live on MSG, MSG Plus and Fuse. Live is not such an easy task in surfing as we don't know exactly when the swell will hit. After 10 years of researching surf data, Quiksilver knows that there is no better break on the east coast than Long Beach during the first two weeks of September. What time the swell will hit? Well that's harder to predict. But MSG is committed to Action Sports as evidenced by their committment to go live under such unpredictable circumstances and we are looking forward to a great contest.
For Quik's part, creating the first major, ASP-sanctioned surf contest in the east - The Quiksilver Pro New York - is a monumental undertaking and one that has been wholly embraced by the latent but powerful surf culture here in New York and by people everywhere. But the biggest impact will be in the City of Long Beach itself, where Quiksilver will take over the newly renovated 120 room Allegira Hotel as well as 20 acres of vacant (believe it) beachfront property to create a surf, skate, bmx, motoX and music festival from September 1-15.
Stay on the look out for more cool announcments around this one-of-a-kind event.
